That Bright Circle Thing

Just a distant memory at this point… This is my tribute!

I was looking for something to make whilst pining for some sunshine or holidays that never happened. August you disappointed and now it’s getting cold. Goodbye hopes of an Indian Summer!

So I just used some textures from Subtle Patterns and the Rockwell font family.

Paris, Le Quatrième

As you can see, the last day in Paris was dominated by the most famous landmark in the world, the Eiffel Tower. The first stop was Place du Trocadéro for an elevated view of the tower. Then I walked towards the tower and over the Seine. The queues are long to go up the tower itself so as you can see by the third picture, it was dark by the time I came down.

The second photograph is a view from the very top of the tower to the gardens below.

The last photograph is of the very last evening in Paris. It was topped off with a carafe of wine on the heated terrace of a local restaurant in Montmartre whilst nibbling on meringue from the patisserie around the corner. I didn’t expect wine and meringue to go so well together!

Apples in Mayonnaise?

Basically this is an incident that happened to me that I then wrote about and decided to visualise through the medium of type *makes arm swish motion* I used the font Dogma and its variants to create the piece.

I did something similar with the cabbage post. Some things are worth remembering!

Sunny Day in Blackrock

These photos were taken on a trip out to Blackrock, a seaside town in Dublin. The photos were taken from the footbridge of the local train station. The first picture shows a disused bathing area. At least I hope it’s disused, it’s a bit on the run down side after all. The view of if of Howth peninsula in the background.

The second picture shows the diving tower which has lost it’s boards over the years. Even though it’s full of graffiti and rust, I still think it has a lot of charm. The bathing area has been there since the 1800s and the concrete ‘pool’ was built in 1887, more on that here. So it is a shame that it looks like this now but at least we still have these reminders of bygone eras. There are a few spots like this still around Dublin that I’d love to be able to get around and photograph.

The graffiti may not bother me too much, it’s the litter that gets me. I don’t care about drinking outside, but take you crap with you!

Aqua Glow UI Button Kit

So this is more how I use Photoshop nowadays. Well apart from some light photo editing. I’ve been really inspired by websites that I’ve found through work that offer various UI elements for designers. Everything from full layouts to buttons to textures. So I tried to make a go at it myself, that way you don’t have to reference the things you use.

I really think you should do that though, but sometimes it doesn’t fit into a design and so why not have a go at DIY and you’ll be prouder of your efforts I guess. I did take the background texture from Subtle Patterns anyway, really great site for that kind of thing if you don’t already know it.

So here I made a set of ‘up’ buttons and a set ‘down’ buttons. As you can see, I tried to make the down buttons look as though they had been highlighted when they were clicked. I made the icons on the buttons myself and the font is Futura.

Unfortunately I can’t put up any of my first attempts at user interface and web design for reeeeally annoying reason, but maybe some day.

Or maybe just on the sneaky sneak!

G2 Business Card

This was a business card I designed for my sister as part of an entrepreneurial project she had in school. I slightly tweaked it but you get the picture. I went for a dainty vintage feel withe the daisy motifs, polka dot pattern and fonts.

Due to the brevity of the project, I didn’t have to create any other print materials. Although it might have been nice to see a logo and stationery suite develop. The headline font is called Grumpy Black and I got it free in a graphic design magazine as part of a retro set of fonts.

From Paris, With Sweeties

This was a little gift that I was brought back from Paris. I had to take a picture of them before I ate them because they were so cute and pretty. It’s a shame to eat things like this sometimes. Like those arty cupcakes, you can see the effort that went in and then your shoving it in your gob and dusting the crumbs off your lap five minutes later. Well that’s what they’re for I guess!

But anyhoo, these were little marzipans dipped in dark chocolate and decorated with icing flowers on top. I don’t even like marzipan! It’s gross! But these were lovely, had to put the photo up.

Thank you to the boy that bought them :)

Timeline Doodles

This was a cartoon I drew on my tablet for my timeline cover photo on Facebook. I thought I could use it as a kind of drawing board. Hence the moaning statement of broke-ness scrawled across it! So that’s the cartoon version of me exploding out from where my profile picture would be.

Although my sister asked if it was me in swimsuit bursting out of the sea. I like her take on it!!!

I’d like to point out that I can actually draw better than this but where’s the fun in that?

Paris, Le Troisième

This was actually my fourth day in Paris but I didn’t want to put the photos of me goofing around Disneyland up, I’ll save that stuff for Facebook!

The plan was to visit The Louvre that day. So I took the metro to Tuileries, had a crêpe at a stall by the entrance, wandered Place de la Concorde opposite the garden entrance, walked through the gardens and saw L’Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel, then onto Musée du Louvre.

I have heard people talk at length about how disappointing the Mona Lisa is. I don’t think those people appreciate art or history so. It’s more important than its size. Having said that, it did irritate me how many bloody tourists were all over it! I mean I know everyone wants a look, but stop hogging it with your big head please. Look, and then make way for the million other people in the queue! *rant rant rant* I think I was more excited to see the Venus de Milo to be honest. Maybe because of the Gummy Venus episode of The Simpsons. Oh yeah. I went there. Classic art to modern cult viewing. TV can be educational!

Anyway, after the Louvre, I went on to the Pompidou Center to see the modern art collection. Along the way, I stopped off to see the Fontaine des Innocents which is the last picture above.

Three Busy Months Calendar

This was a quarter calendar I made for someone I know. Sometimes the little calendar on your phone or computer aren’t enough. You have to have it out on the wall where you can see it, especially if you’re the dizzy sort who doesn’t check any of the calendars on your devices. So if you haven’t invested in one in January, you’re a bit fecked when October rolls around and you have an organisational mess on your hands! So I did a quick, simple layout up and chose their favourite colours. These were the results.
